Ex-Servicemen Benefits in Government Exams
Ex-Servicemen (ESM) — people who have served in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force and have been honourably discharged — get significant benefits in central government civilian recruitment. The age relaxation formula is unique: it's not a flat number of years but calculated based on how long you actually served. Here's everything, exam by exam.
What Ex-Servicemen Candidates Get
Age relaxation of 3 years plus the actual number of years served in defence, subject to an exam-specific maximum.
Zero application fee in SSC and Railways. Reduced fee in Banking (IBPS).
Reserved in Group C and Group D central government posts. Varies by exam and post type.
How the Age Relaxation Works
Ex-Servicemen don't get a simple "+X years" — the relaxation is calculated personally for each candidate.
Example: If you served for 8 years and the General category upper age limit is 32:
Your effective upper age limit = 32 + 3 + 8 = 43 years
- SSC Group C posts: 45 years (General ESM)
- SSC Group D posts: 50 years (General ESM)
- Railways: 45 years (General ESM)
ESM with OBC/SC/ST category:
If you are ESM and also OBC, SC, or ST, the relaxation is:
- OBC ESM: 6 years + service period
- SC/ST ESM: 8 years + service period
Effective Age Limits (General ESM, 8 years service example)
Below is a reference table showing your calculated limit for a typical 8-year service period. Note that your actual relaxation depends on your actual years of service: General limit + 3 + your service years, capped at the exam's maximum ceiling.
| Exam | General Limit | General ESM (example: 8 yrs service) | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL | 32 years | 32 + 3 + 8 = 43 years | 45 years |
| SSC CHSL | 27 years | 27 + 3 + 8 = 38 years | 45 years |
| SSC MTS | 25 years | 25 + 3 + 8 = 36 years | 45–50 years |
| SSC GD Constable | 23 years | 23 + 3 + 8 = 34 years | 45 years |
| SSC CPO | 25 years | 25 + 3 + 8 = 36 years | 45 years |
| RRB NTPC | 33 years | 33 + 3 + 8 = 44 years | 45 years |
| RRB Group D | 33 years | 33 + 3 + 8 = 44 years | 45 years |
| IBPS PO | 30 years | As per IBPS notification | 45 years |
| IBPS Clerk | 28 years | As per IBPS notification | 45 years |

Reserved Posts
Ex-Servicemen reservation applies to Group C and Group D posts. The percentage varies by post and department.
Standard reservations in central government Group C/D:
- 10% of vacancies in Group C (non-technical)
- 20% of vacancies in Group D
- 14.5% of vacancies in SSC Selection Post (various levels)
Group A and B (Gazetted posts): Reservation for ESM does not apply to gazetted posts in the same way. UPSC civil services, for example, does not have a fixed ESM reservation quota. ESM can still appear and get age relaxation, but they compete in the open pool.
Benefits for Dependent Family Members (DESM)
If an Ex-Serviceman has already availed of the ESM reservation once in a civilian government job, the remaining quota for that family can sometimes be transferred to a dependent.
Dependent Ex-Servicemen (DESM): Spouse or children of an Ex-Serviceman can claim ESM benefits in recruitment only if the Ex-Serviceman himself has not already used the reservation to get a central government job. Once the ESM himself gets a government job using ESM quota, the reservation benefit ends for the family.
DESM rules are exam-specific. Not all exams allow DESM claims. Check the notification.
Documents Required
Discharge Book / Service Certificate
The primary document proving you served in the armed forces and were honourably discharged. Issued by the respective service (Army Record Office, Naval record, Air Force record).
For age calculation: Your discharge book must clearly show:
- Date of enrolment
- Date of discharge
- Total service period
The exam authority uses these dates to calculate your age relaxation.
For DESM (dependents):
- Dependent Certificate from Record Office confirming relationship
- Proof that the ESM himself has not availed of ESM reservation to get a civilian government job
No-Objection Certificate (NOC): If you are applying to a central government job while still in service (as a short-service commissioned officer about to be released), you may need an NOC. Check the notification.
A Few Things to Know
- The relaxation formula requires verified service records. Discrepancies in discharge book dates can delay document verification.
- ESM benefits are for central government civilian jobs. Paramilitary (CAPF) recruitment has its own ESM rules — often more favourable. Check CAPF notifications separately.
- Physical fitness standards may be different. For physical posts like constable or GD, ESM candidates may face modified physical tests or age-adjusted standards.
- Once you join a central government job as ESM quota, the ESM reservation is considered used. Your dependent family members cannot subsequently claim ESM quota for another government job.
- UPSC has no fixed ESM reservation — but ESM candidates can appear with age relaxation and compete in the open pool.
FAQ
How is the age relaxation calculated for Ex-Servicemen?
Your relaxation is not a flat number of years. It is calculated individually: your upper age limit is General upper age limit + 3 years + actual number of years you served in the armed forces. For example, if you served 8 years and the General limit is 32, your limit is 32 + 3 + 8 = 43 years. This is subject to an exam-specific absolute ceiling (often 45 or 50 years).
Do Ex-Servicemen candidates get application fee exemptions?
Ex-Servicemen get complete application fee waivers in SSC and Railways recruitments. However, UPSC and SBI do not offer fee exemptions for ESM. IBPS charges a reduced fee of ₹175.
Does Ex-Servicemen reservation apply to all government posts?
No. Reservation for ESM applies to Group C and Group D central government posts only. For Group A and Group B posts (such as UPSC Civil Services), there is no reserved quota, though you can still claim the age relaxation and compete in the General pool.
Can my family members or dependents claim my ESM reservation?
Yes, under the Dependent Ex-Servicemen (DESM) guidelines, if the Ex-Serviceman themselves has never utilized the reservation to obtain a central government job. However, once the ESM joins a civilian government job using the quota, the reservation benefit ends for the family. DESM rules vary by exam, so verify with the official notification.
